Rugs are the item people most often ruin at home. A supermarket carpet shampoo on a viscose rug will brown it permanently, and a hot extraction on a hand-knotted Persian can bleed the dyes in minutes. This is the job worth paying someone else to do.
Rug types we handle
Wool — neutral pH, controlled moisture, no aggressive brushing. Viscose and art silk — low-moisture only, because viscose is essentially wood pulp and turns yellow-brown when wet. Real silk — hand-cleaned, dry-side methods. Persian, Turkish and Afghan hand-knotted — dye-bleed tested corner by corner before anything is applied. Polypropylene and machine-made — full extraction, the most forgiving of the lot.
The process
Rugs are dusted first to shake out the grit trapped at the base of the pile — this alone removes more soil than most people expect. Then a colourfast test on every distinct dye, a fibre-matched pre-treatment, gentle agitation with the nap, rinse or extraction depending on the material, and controlled flat drying with airflow so the backing dries at the same rate as the pile.
Fringes are cleaned by hand. They're the first thing that greys and the first thing visitors notice.
Collection and return
Small rugs we clean on site. Anything large, delicate or badly contaminated we collect, treat properly at our specialist cleaning facility and return within three to five working days. Collection and return is free inside our normal service area.
Pet accidents on rugs
Urine on a rug is worse than urine on a carpet — it soaks straight through to whatever the rug is sitting on, and the salts left behind draw moisture back for years. We flush the affected area rather than surface-treat it, and we're upfront when a rug has been contaminated beyond rescuing.
Rug Cleaning your questions
Can't see yours? Ring us — we'd rather answer it before you book than after.
How much is rug cleaning?
From £35 for a standard rug up to about 2m × 1.5m. Larger, hand-knotted or heavily soiled rugs are quoted individually — send a photo on WhatsApp and we'll price it the same day.
Can you clean a viscose or 'art silk' rug?
Yes, but only with a low-moisture method, and we'll set expectations first. Viscose loses its sheen with age and no cleaner can restore that. What we can do is remove soil and stains without browning the fibre.
Will the colours run?
We test every distinct colour for dye stability before we start. If a rug fails the test we switch to a dry-side method or advise against cleaning altogether rather than risk bleeding.
How long does a rug take to dry?
On site, four to six hours. Collected rugs are returned fully dry, usually within three to five working days.
